Jim and Nancy Engel discovered kittens in the backyard of their Frankenmuth home in 2004 after a colony of cats moved into the cluster of pine trees a few houses down. The Engel family TNRed (Trap, Neuter, Released) the colony of cats, and found the kittens loving homes. Other people in the area heard that they were rehoming kittens, and started calling the family when they found kittens or needed their cat rehomed. Before the Engel Family knew, they were operating a cat rescue in the basement of their home. In 2005, the rescue relocated to List Street, our current location, and have expanded from one room to a 7 roomed cat rescue. Today, Pet Angel is a non-profit 501(c)(3), no-kill shelter that specializes in a mostly free-roam facility. Since opening, we have rehomed approximately 2,000 cats and kittens. All of the cats that come through Pet Angel are fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped before going to loving, forever homes and they also receive socialization, love, and care while being at our rescue.
We are volunteer based, depending solely on gracious donations to operate and care for each and every cat that comes into our care. Pet Angel is licensed by the Department of Agriculture, and Michigan Pet Fund Alliance certified. We would love to add you to our family, either as a volunteer, a donor, or a family who adopts one of our loving fur-friends.
We have a community pet-food locker for those in our community who need a little extra help. If you have a bag of food your pet no longer likes, consider donating to our pet food locker!
Sometimes, elderly citizens in assisted living homes want a furry companion, but don't have the ability to carry litter and food into their apartment. Give us a call to see if you qualify to rent-a-cat!
Whether you need community service hours for school, scouts, greek life, or just to give back- we'd love to have you apart of our team! Click on "volunteers" to learn more!
Nancy founded Pet Angel in 2004, and has been our President ever since! Nancy and her husband, Jim, ran Pet Angel out of their own home and pockets for many years, and are proud to still be running Pet Angel after 16 years. Nancy's love for animals, volunteering and giving back to the community makes her the purrfect president for Pet Angel.
